French Market Entry Strategies for Malaysian Exporters

Thursday, 15 February 2024

Malaysia is ranked as one of the leading trading countries in the world, ranking 24th in exports and 26th in imports worldwide. Malaysia also ranks among the world’s most open economies, with a trade to GDP ratio that has averaged over 130 percent since 2010. As France is one of the top economies in the world in terms of GDP, the market offers export opportunities for Malaysian exporters.

Prior to entering the French market, Malaysian exporters must ensure compliance with EU regulations and adhere to the policies outlined in the European Green Deal. The European Green Deal (EGD) is a set of policy initiatives, designed to guide the EU towards their goal of climate neutrality by 2050. The EGD also aims to reduce pollution, reverse biodiversity loss, shift towards a circular economy model, promote sustainable mobility and accelerate the transition to clean, renewable energy sources.

Under the EGD, all goods sold on the EU market will need to meet higher environmental and sustainability standards. Additionally, SMEs from third world countries will need to provide more information on the products they export to EU countries. Exporters will need to assess their export readiness through certifications and accreditations that are EU-recognised, such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Direction (CSRD), Corporation Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and EU AI Act.

Industries to explore in France includes green technology and sustainability, e-mobility and electric vehicles, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, and industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing. There are also opportunities under the food and beverage sector, especially for organic and specialty food products, and halal products.
